Stone soup

A long time ago in the time of a great famine, people were afraid their families would go hungry, so they hid the small amounts of food they did have. They even hid their food from their friends and neighbours.

A traveller was travelling from village to village with his son, living off his wits. As they was walking along the son said. “I'm so hungry.” “Don't worry, son,” the father said. “Only another three miles and we’ll get something to eat.” “But how?” said the son. “We haven't got any money.”

The father looked to his son and smiled. Then, he picked up a nice smooth stone about the size of a duck's egg from the roadside. “With this stone, I will get us food, not only for us, but for the whole village. Watch and you will learn.”

He put the stone into his pocket and they made their way to the village.  There they met an old woman. “Can I help you?” she said. “Yes,” said the traveller. “Do you know anyone in the village with a large pot?” “Yes” said the old woman, “there’s a family just down the lane with nine children, she’s sure to have a large pot.”

They went to the house and asked if they could borrow the pot “Yes” said the woman, “but why do you want it?“ “Well” said the traveller “we come from a country called Estonia and in Estonia we make a very special dish called Stone Soup. We make it with very special stones like this.” He took the stone from his pocket and showed it to her. “With my stone and this large pot we can make soup for the whole village”

He filled the pot with water and built a fire under it.  Soon the stone was boiling in the pot of water.  After a while the traveller tasted it. “Mmm, the stone soup is almost ready,” he said, “It just needs a few vegetables.” “I have a few carrots”, cried the woman excitedly and threw five carrots into the pot. Then as more people gathered round, the traveller said. “A few more vegetables and the soup will be perfect”.

A small boy about six years old was watching curiously.  When he heard the word food! his heart leapt and with a rumbling tummy he ran home to tell his mother about the traveller and the stone soup.  The whole family came back with nine beans.“ This is all we have to spare, I hope it helps” and threw them into the pot.

As word got round, the people of the village where getting quite exited about the soup.  A young man came along and dropped four potatoes in the pot.  Then somebody came along and popped in three nice juicy tomatoes.  One by one more people from the village came to see how this wonderful soup was being made and helped by adding small amounts of food from their own meagre rations.

By seven-o-clock that evening, the whole village was tucking into the most delicious soup they had ever tasted.

The moral of the story (By working together, with everyone contributing what they can, a greater good is achieved.)
