Geocache Description:

Ruakaka is a small town in the North of New Zealand on the east coast, approximately 30 kms south of Whangarei in the Bream Bay area. The name Ruakaka is a combination of the two words RUA and KAKA. RUA meaning Māori for 'TWO' or 'NEST' and KAKA being the name of a native parrot. The area of Ruakaka was named Bream Bay by Captain James Cook during his first voyage to New Zealand when he first visited the region on 25 November 1769. It was named due to the ease of the capture of 90 - 100 bream fish soon after anchoring. It is now thought that the snapper have been mistaken for bream. Cook also named, in the same vein, Bream Head and Bream Trail which are areas at the top and bottom of the bay itself. The bay has beautiful white sandy beaches looking out towards the 3 native reserve islands which are the Hen and Chicken Islands and Sail Rock. There is NO human population on any of these three islands. At this point you are also looking across the water at Mt Mania. Other Bream Bay localities such as One Tree Point, Takahiwai and even Waipu are often included in general conversation regarding the area.
