The event takes place on the Marina Bay Street Circuit and was the inaugural night race and first street circuit in Asia designed for Formula One races. This track has seen twenty F1 races since it’s inauguration.
The track is lit with 1600 high intensity lights. It is a very tight circuit with lots of walls close to the track. Incidents with cars brushing the walls lead to a high number yellow flag incidents and of safety cars being called onto the track.
Charles Leclerc won his third consecutive pole position this season. However he was upset with Ferrari due to team orders telling him to save his engine. That was code telling him to not pass his team mate Sebastian Vettel even though he was faster. Vettel went on to win the race which was his first win this season. Lewis Hamilton was likewise upset with Mercedes for not calling him in to the pits for a tire change at the right moment which caused him to finish in second place.
Fastest lap was set by Denmark’s Kevin Magnussen driving the only American F1 entry Haas-Ferrari with a time of 1:42.301 for the 5.063 km (3.146 mi) circuit.
