Il pub matricola.
Se dici “Milano” – e sei un po’ giargiana – ancora oggi ti viene da aggiungere “da bere”. "Milano da bere" è un’espressione che ha oramai una quarantina d’anni, di cui si sono perse quasi le origini (io stesso le ho dovute verificare per non esordire con una fake news); oggi, più che allo yuppismo anni Ottanta, finisce per riferirsi alla “movida” meneghina, ai suoi “ape” modaioli, alle serate estive all’Arco della Pace a sorseggiare cocktail fatti male ma per fortuna costosi.
Milano però vanta una tradizione di locali storici nel vero senso della parola, sopravvissuti a ben più che a Mani Pulite o alla moda passeggera di “bersi una cosa all’Arco”. A pochi isolati da dove vi trovate (o troverete) per questa cache c’è il Bar Basso, classe 1933, dietro il cui bancone è nato il Negroni Sbagliato. In zona Ticinese il bar Magenta serve i suoi clienti dal 1907 tra i suoi ancora intatti arredi liberty. Il Camparino, all’imbocco della Galleria Vittorio Emanuele, presta servizio dal 1915 (peraltro, chi scrive ha fatto i suoi primi aperitivi proprio davanti, o meglio ai piedi, del suo bancone: ai tempi ero talmente piccolo da dovermi mettere in punta di piedi per arrivare ad olive ed arachidi…).
Meno noto al grande pubblico, ma un vero landmark di Città Studi, è il Pub Matricola.Il locale ha compiuto a marzo 90 anni tondi, come testimonia la data riportata nel “mosaico” all’ingresso. Difficile pensare che la Casa dello Studente, eretta all’angolo opposto dell’incrocio nel 1934, sorga lì per pura coincidenza.
La cache: la mia primogenita osserva il Matricola standosene un po’ in disparte, in un nascondiglio all’apparenza anonimo, ma credo carico di storia. Tra le moltissime curiosità ed aneddoti della mia città che il geocaching mi sta facendo scoprire, una delle più incredibili ed affascinanti riguarda i segni ancora visibili dei bombardamenti dell’agosto 1943.
Non ho riscontri documentali, ma potrei averne trovato uno non catalogato. Oltre a loggare la cache, potreste confermare (o smentire) la mia tesi.
The Matricola pub
If you say “Milano” – and you are hillbilly-ish – you still tend to add “da bere” [“Milano da bere”, literally “Milano to drink”, was the slogan of an Italian liqueur TV commercial back in the Eighties]. This motto already turned forty, and its origins are nearly forgotten (I for one had to check them to avoid giving fake news); nowadays it doesn’t even refer anymore to the Eighties yuppie movement, but to Milan’s “movida”, its stylish “aperitivi”, its summer nights at the Arco della Pace, spent drinking poorly mixed cocktails, yet expensive ones.
Still, Milan can exhibit a heritage of historical bars and pubs, which survived much more than “Mani Pulite” or fads like “drinking a thing at the Arco”. Few blocks from where you are (or will be) standing to find this cache, stands the “Bar Basso”, established in 1933; “Negroni Sbagliato” [a cocktail prepared with ice, red vermouth, bitter and sparkling white wine, very famous in Italy] was created behind its counter. In the “porta Ticinese” district, the Magenta bar serves clients since 1907 and its liberty furniture is still intect. The “Camparino”, at the entrance of Galleria Vittorio Emanuele, was opened back in 1915 (I made my first “aperitivi” before – better, under its counter: I was so small then that I had to get on my tiptoes to reach olives and chips).
Less blazoned than the others, but a real landmark in Città Studi district, is the Matricola pub. Recently undergone a consistent restyling – which, though respecting the internal structure, sacrificed its historical hanging sign [see photo] – this pub turned 90 in March 2019, as witnessed by the mosaic at the entrance (floor is still the original one). It’s nearly a century that freshmen from Politecnico, and not only them, crowd its tables. It cannot be a case if the Students House, standing at the other side of the crossroad, was erected there five years later, in 1934.
The cache: my firstborn watches the Matricola from the sideline, in an apparently anonymous hiding, that instead can be as historical as the pub. One of the most interesting things I discvered about my town while geocaching, are the war signs still visible in Milan, left from August 1943 bombings. Maybe I found one that was not catalogued yet, while searching for caches.
