N Seoul Tower - New Namsan Locks of Love Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

mighty_lamp75: I originally placed this as a tribute to the recently archived cache here. We are in the process of trying to restore the old cache, so I am archiving this for now...to clear the area and accommodate the process. I respectfully request (for what it's worth here) that I reserve the option to reinstall this cache sometime in the future, if the situation arises, as per geocaching guidelines and time limits. I will be there shortly to retrieve my container, also as per geocaching guidelines, concerning archived caches. Thank you to those who searched for my version of this great cache!

Geocache Description:

In the center if the city, on Mt. Namsan is Namsan Park, popular for hiking trails, tourist attractions, N Seoul Tower, and panoramic views of downtown Seoul. Namsan, literally translates to “South Mountain”, and is the largest park in Seoul attracting thousands of people everdayday, who visit to experience one of many beautiful slices of nature in the middle of the urban city.

Some of the most spectacular views of downtown Seoul and the surrounding area can be had at the peak of Namsan at 262 meters (860 feet) or from the top of N Seoul Tower which rises another 237 meters (777 feet) into the sky.

N Seoul Tower is a communication and observation tower located in Namsan Mountain, central Seoul, South Korea. Built in 1969, the tower has been a symbol of Seoul. It has also been known as the Namsan Tower or Seoul Tower. After the tower's original owner merged with the CJ Corporation, it was renamed the N Seoul Tower.

History:

During the rule of Taejo, the first king of the Joseon Dynasty, Namsan was considered a sacred shamanistic site. He ordered the construction of a fortress wall that would protect the city from invaders. The wall that ran through Namsan marked the southern boundary of the city. Some sections of the wall still exist to this day and many are being renovated.

In 1925, the Japanese, who occupied Korea at the time, built an important Shinto shrine known as Chosen Jingu at the peak of Namsan as part of their policy of Japanization. The shrine was dedicated Amaterasu, the Japanese goddess of the sun and universe and Emperor Meiji, the 122nd Emperor of Japan who reigned from 1867 to 1912. After the independence of Korea in 1945, the shrine was demolished.

In 1970, the Patriot An Chung-gun Memorial Hall was built on the former site of the Shinto shrine. This memorial hall was built in honor of Ahn, a Korean nationalist and independence activist, who assassinated Ito Hirobumi, the former prime minister of Japan and first Resident-General of Kore.

Though most visitors come to Namsan Park to enjoy the views, the nature, or go for a hike, there are also a few interesting sights to see. Other than the N Seoul Tower, there is the Mongmyeoksan Beacon Hill Site (Bongsudae), a set of beacons constructed to warn the city of incoming enemy invasions, an octagonal pavilion known as Palgakjeong, and Locks of Love, a wall of locks that symbolize endless love for those who hang them.

How to get there:

You can access the N Seoul tower using a cable car, near Hoehyeon Station or local buses #2 and #3. These are a few (Yellow) buses that you can ride from the base of the mountain to the top, then continue on foot to the tower area. You may also hike up the hill using any one of the many trails and roads.
Use following subway station :
- #2 exit of Chungmuro station of Line #3 and #4,
- #6 exit of Dongkuk University station of Line #3.

What you're looking for:

In honor of the previous cache that was hidden here, I made sure to bring it back in the spirit as it was originally created.  The trees are easy enough to find! Once there, you'll need to use your phone or GPS to get closer to where the lock is hidden! It won't be easy! There are thousands upon thousands of locks on the trees and fences! You'll need to find the one that holds the log to sign!

Don't forget to bring a pen...because PHOTO LOGS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED

NO THROWDOWNS...please don't add your own lock to replace this cache. It is checked on often and it won't be muggled! So, there's no need to replace this container.

NO SPOILERS!  Any photos with spoilers will be deleted without warning. Any logs with written spoilers will be deleted without warning, but I will contact you to edit and resubmit your find, minus the spoilers.

Spoliers can ruin the challenge and fun some cachers crave!

Good luck, happy hunting and happy caching!

Congratulations to baekjm on FTF! And his first FTF!

Be sure to check out the other wonderful caches in the park and those around the city!
