Geocache Description:

The last of the Leaverites traveled through here Circa 1860. To reach this point they had to make many tough decisions about the weight of their loads, and what to do about it. Leaverite there was unanimous. So they dropped many of their belongings to lighten the load on their U-Haul wheelbarrows that they had borrowed for the journey west, including several pairs of undergarments, a pie tin, a pair of penny loafers and tons of empty cans of potted meat that they had been eating along the way. Being very thrift, they had kept those cans hoping to recycle them upon their arrival. After filling a couple of coffee cups and an old boot with water at the Carson river, they begin their journey south for reasons that have been lost in history. At this location team leader Orvan Otho Leaverite spoke to his brother, Artimus Ira, about the caterwauling and bellyaching from old maid Beulah Dagget. They had a very thorough discussion with several options offered for thought. They discussed it with a few of the other men folk in their wheelbarrow train, including their Father, Maynard Wilbren Leaverite, and after 5 or 6 minutes it was unanimous, Leaverite here. So they sat Beulah Dagget on a wooden chair, gave her a bag of crackers and a big can of potted swine offal and bid her Goodwill. They continued their journey south, east for about an hour, then they turn south again. They made several camps, however they had only traveled 25 to 30 yards beyond where they had dropped off old maid Dagget, so they could still hear her carrying on. after a week she was out of earshot. Had she decided to get off the chair and follow them it would’ve been an easy trail to follow, because everything they thought was heavy, or it just fell out of their wheelbarrow they chose to Leaverite there. For years after, countless pioneers and settlers would pass this area and they would cross over the trail of debris that the Leaverites had chosen to Leaverite where it was. Including old maid Dagget. Many diaries and journals written by later pioneers and settlers made entries that mentioned her..

“ upon clearin the dreary valley of the shadow of death commonly called the 40 mile desert, we came across the most unusual sight. An older woman sitting in a chair, her bosom covered in cracker crumbs, her chin  stained with canned pork offal. ‘tween mouthfuls of crackers and offal she would begin to bellyache and caterwaul and complain, one could decipher from the wagon tracks of previous settlers, folks would steer clear around her“  Z. M. Berry, Sept 12, 1861

“ for many days we heard upon the wind the most horrible of sounds, some within the wagon train spoke positive it was a wraith, but the more sensible of us thought it to be wild cats. On the morning we came across the most dreadful site. Afore us sat the most horrible woman on the ground with what appeared to be a broken chair that had rotted under her, Her clothes were mostly tattered, rotted away from elements and time, she would reach into an old rusted can and pull from within its interior a fist of dried out unknown substance and greedily eat on it. Upon attempt at conversation she would spew forth a series of insults and foul declarations, the like we have never had the displeasure of hearing. We made haste to continue our journey and put that awful sight behind us.” Raleigh Philip Goodwin August 23, 1864

Adventures and off road enthusiast explore and pass through this area many times, it is said, people that do stop here for whatever reason and turn off their engines and sit quietly can still hear her bellyaching, caterwauling, and harping in wind, But really, who wants to hear that?
