Davidson County was formed in 1822 from Rowan County.  It was named after Brigadier General William Lee Davidson, an American Revolutionary War general killed at the Battle of Cowan’s Ford in 1781.  There was an earlier county with the same name that was formed in the far western part of North Carolina in 1786.  However, that area was encompassed into Tennessee when it became a separate state in 1796.  The county seat is Lexington and Thomasville is the larges city.
