Scotland County was formed in 1899 from Richmond County.  It is named for the ancestral home of many of its inhabitants, the Highland Scots.  The county seat is Laurinburg, which is also the largest city.  Scotland County was the destination of thousands of Scottish Settlers during the eighteenth century, which greatly influenced its growth and development.
