Washington County was formed in 1799 from part of Tyrrell County.  It was named for George Washington.  There are three incorporated towns in Washington County. The county seat is Plymouth, which is also its largest town.  The Pungo Unit of the Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge in the southern part of the county is said to have the best public black bear viewing in North Carolina.
