Wayne County was formed in 1779 from part of Dobbs County.  It was named for “Mad Anthony” Wayne, w general in the American Revolutionary War.  Part of Wayne County was taken to form Wilson County in 1855.  The county seat is Goldsboro, which is also its largest city.
