Geocache Description:

Years ago this was a happening intersection.  With the old cement pillars and old barb wire you can get a feeling that you were there when it was all happening. On a clear day, you could see for miles... A new 6 mile extension has been added to the Goshen bike trial. The trail is lined with 100's of huge cottonwoods. enjoy your ride or your leisurely walk.... The Goshen Trail Extension that will allow you to cycle through two counties on one trail — from Troy to O’Fallon is officially open. It’s been a little over five years on the drawing board, but the Troy-O’Fallon Bike Trail Connector is complete. . The approximate $9.9 million project will encompass just over 8 miles of bike trail and a newly constructed bridge, according to an authority at MCT. The funding vehicle for the project is the Metro East Park & Recreation District, a Collinsville-based agency that worked on the projects in both Madison and St. Clair counties. Much of the trail is built on abandoned railroad right of way. MCT has 130 miles of pedestrian/bike trails in Madison County and now will be connected with St. Clair County’s 183 miles of trails. The Goshen Trail Extension is an 8.8 mile asphalt trail with a trail head and parking available in Troy, near Old Troy Road at Illinois Route 162. The extension crosses underneath a concrete underpass just slightly west of where the current Goshen Trail terminates, just south of I-55. Along the trail there are two concrete piers that were once part of the old CSX Transportation Railroad that were used in building and erecting the new trail bridge, but not as supportive beams. Efforts were made to evaluate and determine whether or not the original standing piers could be incorporated into the new bridge construction, but blueprints from the Illinois Department of Transportation could not confirm that the piers complied with current seismic standards.. MCT will own, operate and maintain the trail.... MCT Goshen Trail Facts....
