Lappajärvi syntyi noin 78 miljoonaa vuotta sitten meteoriitin törmätessä maapalloon. Vuosimiljoonien aikana kallioperän rapautuminen ja aineksen kulkeutuminen sekä jääkausien vaikutukset ovat hävittäneet alkuperäisen kraatterin maljamaisen muodon. Nyt näkyvän kraatterin halkaisija on 17 km ja syvyys 150 m antaen Lappajärven kunnalle vaalittavaksi muiston miljoonien vuosien takaa. Lake Lappajärvi was created about 78 million years ago when a meteorite struck the Earth. Over millions of years, the original crater's bowl-like shape has been changed by bedrock erosion and material migration, as well as by the effects of ice ages. The crater, now visible, has a diameter of 17 km and a depth of 150 m, giving the Lappajärvi municipality a cherished memory of millions of years. Many of the ice ages in the area are the root cause of current land formations.
