We recently spent a couple of weeks down this way and we started off in this area with some friends who had been here before. They told us about this unknown track that they had found and we all decided to take a trip to the top to check out the views.
To start with, they had to find the track again as it had been a while since they were here. Eventually it was located and armed with the appropriate supplies - drink, snack, jacket etc - we headed off. It wasn't long before the track started climbing, but we were told it was a short, sharp climb then we would level out a bit. I should learn not to trust this type of description. After about 30-40 minutes, we came out of the bush and arrived at a seat. The views are quite good here. You are pretty much in the open with short sections of bush from here on up. Before you get to the top you will encounter a section our friends call 'The Hilary Step'. This is a gully with fixed ropes to help pull yourself up. This is where teamwork may be needed. It was extremely slippery the day we did it as there had been rain for a few days previous and the area is slippery clay. Once past this, it is not much further to the top.
While we sorted out a position and details for a cache, our friends admired the view and even managed to get 1 bar reception on their phones if they stood in the right spot.
