Geocache Description:

This collection of caches has nothing to do with the Church Micro series in the UK. Given that the Australian 2016 census indicates that No Religion and Jedi Knight are the fastest increasing classifications of the optional religion question "What is the person's religion?" it is not surprising that there is surfeit of empty churches that have been repurposed.

St Philip's Anglican church Port Broughton

“The English Church at Port Broughton . . . is situated on the side of a hill overlooking the town. A fine view of the town, the surrounding country, the harbor, its land-locked bay, and the distant ocean is obtained. A prettier site for a church could not be selected. The land on which it is built was presented to the church by J. White, Esq. The plan was presented by W. Mallen [sic], architect, Port Pirie. . . The foundation stone was laid by Miss K. White, a young lady of 8 summers, on last Easter Monday. The bell was presented by Mr H. M. Peel.” [Wallaroo Times 18 Aug 1886]

Foundation stone 26 Apr 1886 by Miss K White whose father gave land, opened 11 Aug 1886, consecrated 1 Nov 1889. Design by William K Mallyon who wrote in 1913 “It is gratifying to find this church so clean and so cared for”.

The last service was held in June 2015 and the building is now a private residence.
