Kumagaya and the Chichibu district has a interesting relation to Kenji Miyazawa. In September, 1916 approximately 100 years ago, the Morioka high agriculture and forestry school second grader Kenji Miyazawa participated in "the trip of Chichibu, Nagatoro area geological survey" and he and his classmate started the trip from Kumagaya and went around Yorii, Nagatoro, Ogano and Chichibu from September 2 to 7. And impressionable 20-year-old young man Kenji Miyazawa composed many tankas (japanese poem) in the trip and some tankas are inscribed in a monument. Kenji Miyazawa visited various places in the journey and I installed a cache in the place.
宮沢賢治と熊谷、秩父地方には興味深い関係があります。
約百年前の大正5年9月、盛岡高等農林学校2年生の宮沢賢治は学校が主催する「秩父・長瀞方面 地質調査の旅」に参加し、級友ら25名と9月２日から７日にかけて熊谷から寄居、長瀞、小鹿野、秩父、三峯山と各地を巡りました。
そして、多感な二十歳の青年宮沢賢治は旅の先々で多くの短歌を詠み、その一部は現在歌碑として刻まれています。
宮沢賢治が道中各地で心を動かされ、短歌を詠んだ場所にキャッシュを設置しました。
賢治の足跡を辿り、賢治が詠んだ句を通して、当時の賢治の心境に思いを馳せてみませんか。
The Kenji party climbed Mt. Mitsumine from Ogano and visited the Mitsumine shrine on Sept. 5, 1916. Because the Kunigami station (Minano area) was the terminal in Chichibu Railway in the Taisho era, the Kenji party seemed to climb Mt. Mitsumine on foot from Ogano. The distance from Ogano town to Oowa Omotesando entrance of the Mitsumine shrine has approximately 18km in case of the current road and the mountain pass from Oowa to the top is very severe. Because the Kenji party seemed to continue walking from Ogano town to the Mitsumine shrine, it seemed to take eight or nine hours. Besides, Chichibu district is rainy all on the day, and it seemed that the journey was very hard.
Kenji finished severe mountaineering on that day and was able to finally take a rest in a pilgrim’s lodging. Kenji composed a tanka in the evening in the lodging after rain was left.
大正5年9月５日、賢治たち一行は小鹿野から三峯山に登り、三峯神社を訪れています。
大正時代の秩父鉄道は国神駅（現在の皆野辺り）が終点でしたので、賢治たち一行は小鹿野から徒歩で三峰山に登ったものと思われます。
小鹿野から三峯神社の表参道入口の大輪までの距離は現在の道のりで約18kmありますので、ここまで徒歩で5,6時間は掛かったでしょう。更に、大輪から三峯神社までの表参道は厳しい山 道で約3時間掛かりますので、賢治たち一行は小鹿野から8,9時間歩き続けて三峯神社に着いたものと思われます。
その上、その日の秩父地方は一日中雨のため道程は大変厳しく、簑を纏って山道を黙々と歩く一行の姿が想像されます。
この日、賢治は厳しかった山行を終え、漸く宿坊で体を休めることが出来ました。
そして、その夜賢治が雨上がりの宿坊で詠んだ詩が残されています。
星月夜 なほいなづまは ひらめきぬ 三みねやまに なけるこほろぎ
稲妻はまだ遠くで光っているが、三峰山の雨は上がり星や月が出てきた。深々とした三峯山に鳴くコオロギの声が昼間の厳しかった行程を忘れさせてくれます。
深山の趣がじんと伝わる一句です。
