Liuyun Xiaoqu adjoins Tianhenan Xiaoqu and both are porous for pedestrians but not for cars. One of the earliest and most important measures taken in the initial area upgrade in 2003 (there was another major upgrade in 2010) was shutting off car access at various entry points, effectively pedestrianizing large parts of the interior. This cache is located near one such entry point on the eastern perimeter.
The mix of shops has changed over the years from nearly exclusively cafes (in 2003) to more clothing and fashion shops (in 2010) to a greater variety today, with many more restaurants moving in. It's taken a while since the whole area is quite hidden away, but Liuyun Xiaoqu and the adjoining Tianhenan Xiaoqu are now popular and trendy places to hang out. Is there any better example than Liuyun Xiaoqu and Tianhenan Xiaoqu of successfully revitalizing the old 'danwei' or 'work unit' style 9-or-so-storey housing so common in Guangzhou and other cities?
