五寮尖山 (Wuliaojian Mountain) is one of the premier hiking destinations in Northern Taiwan. With an altitude of 639 meters, a climb to the summit affords you spectacular views of the central mountains as well as Taoyuan, Sanxia and even Taipei in the distance. But few people take the northern route up to the peak and miss out on a vigorous and beautiful hike through thick jungle vegetation and alongside a small mountain stream. This cache is located at the summit of the mountain. The last 50 meters is a bit steep and precarious so make sure you use the ropes to help yourself ascend and take your time so you are sure about your footholds. Once on the top, enjoy the panoramic views and if you're lucky, perhaps even an eagle or two soaring overhead! It generally takes about an hour and ten minutes to get to the summit from the parking area if you are moving at a reasonable pace, although I'd recommend starting earlier and taking your time as the hike gets progressively steeper, more exhausting, and more dangerous as you get near the top. Bring plenty of water, especially in the hot summer months, and be careful of the slippery, moss-covered rocks! Please bring your own pen.
