Geocache Description:

So, just who was the family that settled this land here at the park?

John Wesley Penn is the son John Anderson Penn and Nancy Jane Anderson. The Penn family and their children came to Texas and settled at Indian Spring, later to be known as Penn's Spring from Sangamon County, Illinois in 1854. John Wesley married Lucinda Moore on May 13, 1859 in Cedar Hill, Dallas, Texas. Their children are Richard Wesley, Joseph Reuben, Laura E, Frances L, Ella Charlotte, Sidney Johnson, Morrison Moore, Andrew Jackson and Lucinda "Lucy".

Lucinda Moore is the daughter of Reuben Moore and Charlotte Coley. The family also came from Sangamon County Illinois to Dallas County Texas. Lucinda Penn was the first woman to manage and own Penn Farm. She managed all farm operations from 1862-1865 while her husband was in the Civil War and for several years after his passing in 1888.

John’s obituary in the Dallas Times Herald read, “A HORRIBLE DEATH----An Old Settler Died From the Poisonous Effects of a Rattlesnake Bite.- Mr. John W. Penn, an old resident and respected farmer living on the mountain near Cedar Hill, in Dallas county, was bit by a rattle snake last Friday evening, from the effect of which, he died early Saturday morning. The fangs of the reptile were buried deep in the back of the hand, and as soon as he was bit, Mr. Penn declared he would never survive.”

After her husband died, Lucinda lived on the farm with son Andrew “Andy” Jackson. She was loved and respected by her family, neighbors, and friends. Every year on her birthday, people came from miles away for a big dinner at the Penn Farmhouse. Lucinda continued to manage 1/3 of the farm until her passing in 1928 at 87 years old.

Permit is on file at the park office.
