Geocache Description:

This is a BONUS traditional cache to add to the already existing Rosstown Railways Series - only 4 caches remain in the series..

Destined never to be used but always a dream. William Murray Ross built the never to be used Rosstown Railway first in 1883 and then had to be redone in 1887-8 due to the shoddiness of the original build. It was to carry produce from his other failed venture in the area the sugar beet mill.     (the Northern Queensland Sugar cane industry would have probably ended it time anyway.) There was a lot of concern from the market gardeners in the area that his mill would use all the water supply available in the area. The railway fell into disrepair quickly as did the sugar beet mill. Carnegie was known as Rosstown until the early 1900s but its namesake hotel still stands on Dandenong Road in Carnegie North. The railway would have been useful in today's age as it would have linked the Dandenong Line /go under the Frankston Line - close to where this cache is located, and eventually meet Sandringham Line at Elsternwick.

The Frankston line was originally the  Caulfield to Mordialloc line that opened in 1881. Ross paid for 1/3 of this embankment and underpass- the government paid for the rest. He originally planned for space for 4 lines - but there was only ever one line that went under. ( Until the whole project flopped!) Thus this underpass has history.

According to Ross, there was one journey along the railway line on 14th November 1888. Among invited guests onboard was Sir Thomas Bent, the prominent politician and future premier of Victoria (1904-09) and after whom Bentleigh was named.

The CACHE -

This cache is placed in some bushland alongside the Frankston Railway line. The approach should be from Katandra Road ( where there may be a park on the  East side ) IN ORDER FOR THIS CACHE TO SURVIVE, LOOK ALL-WAYS BEFORE APPROACHING CACHE.

At the collection of the WHITE POLES at street level,  head up the hill to the fence line along the railway line, then follow the fenceline South - its a little treacherous. The fence along here is secure and it is not possible to walk in front of a train!

At GZ, you should be protected from view from the road as you duck down to find the cache - There is a panel that hides you from the railway line. The Cache has a log, pencil, and rooms for swaps. Medal for FTF which went to n0w0rries when the 8.10pm Frankston train passed by.

At the back of the log please feel free to record any trains that happen to pass while you are there and record the direction -

Once finished, replace the cache as found and choose your timing to return to the path below,  following the way you came up.

The caches that are left are -
