Geocache Description:

Down the road (N7), south of Kamieskroon, is the grave of Charles James Darter. CJ Darter, born in Cape Town in 1870, was a lieutenant in the British Namaqualand Border Scouts during the Boer War of 1899 -1902.  Lt CJ Darter, then aged 32 and who himself was a sharpshooter, was killed on this spot on 18 March 1902, during an ambush while he was out scouting on horseback from his base in Garies.

His grave, under an Wild Olive tree, is popularly referred to as the smallest part of Britain outside Britain in the world as it was surveyed in 1905 and registered in the name of “The Colonial Government” in 1906.  Copy of the registered Surveyor General Diagram under images to this cache.

The site is identified by the tree growing just next to the grave, and can be very easy to miss when driving past on the N7. You will need to climb over a small fence to get up close, but people have made it relatively easy by placing big rocks to step on.  This access to the site is registered as a “right of way” and you will thus not be trespassing on private property when visiting the site.
