It is true. I love history and I am not afraid to tell you that as I watch something with some tidbit of history mentioned or as I read something that sparks my interest it often sends me down an internet rabbit hole. This part of Kansas is packed with history. The Native Americans roamed this land before the European’s ever built the Pinta, Nina or the Santa Maria (Follow this link if you are a history nerd and need a quick fix https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christopher_Columbus.) Then came Francisco Vázquez de Coronado and his team of explorers traveling into Kansas looking for gold (I know, I can’t even write a short paragraph without veering off course. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Francisco_V%C3%A1zquez_de_Coronado). Soon, trappers and traders found a different kind of wealth in the animals that lived in this area. (Here I go again! https://www.kshs.org/kansapedia/osage-europeans-and-the-missouri-fur-trade/19292). They had made trips into this territory and acted as guides for the Lewis and Clark expedition. From May 1804 to September 1806, the Corps of Discovery Expedition was the first American expedition to cross the western portion of the United States (Don’t get lost! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lewis_and_Clark_Expedition). Later came the pro-slavery vs. free-state drama that was the spark that set off the civil war (My next history fix https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bleeding_Kansas). Wow! All of that happened right here in the boring Midwest? Maybe it is all Thomas Jefferson’s fault. It was his idea to keep what Lewis and Clark found from the rest of the world. Maybe his methods were too good. My head is spinning as I hide this cache and I am getting hungry too. Maybe I will rest, eat an artichoke and take another side-track in time (http://cryptiana.web.fc2.com/code/jeffers3.htm)
