Newcastle is a vibrant city bursting with things to do, and fun to be had. The city has worked hard to ‘renew’ itself in a range of ways since transitioning from a ‘steel town’ to its present form, including a range of projects to beautify the CBD, which particularly in the western end, had become a little rundown.
Once such project was the ‘Art Box’ project, which allows artists to partner with the city to paint Power Cabinets, and other urban infrastructure – with the goal of brightening urban areas, reducing graffitti, engaging the community and providing an opportunity for creative input.
Newcastle now has a thriving arts scene, where creative pursuits and artistic flair are celebrated. With more artists per capita than any other city in Australia, art galleries, public art in communal spaces, and street art are all on the rise. It's great to see so much on display (despite how controversial some of the pieces were when they were purchased).
The Pillar People Adventure Lab takes you through a short tour or some of the 'lighter' side of street art, it's a bit of fun and whimsy, but they do in my view make the street scene a little more interesting. Keep your eyes open for plenty more though - please try it on foot, or on a bike, and take the time to look around you.

I will be checking, and I will reserve the right to remove any log where this has not occurred. I'm sorry, but there have to be some rules. Art is subjective after all, so you'll be subject to this!
