Giant bison once roamed the southern states!
Bison are majestic animals that roam the country side grazing on grasses. Today Bison are found on ranches in Texas or places like Yellowstone National Park. However, did you know that 500,000 years ago there was another species of Bison roaming around? This ancient species of Bison was called the Giant Ice Age Bison and for good reason. It was much larger than our modern Bison with horns that were 7 feet across from tip to tip! Our modern Bison only has a horn-span of 2.2 feet! The Giant Ice Age Bison became extinct some 20,000 years ago so today in North America we only have its smaller horned cousin.
There is an excellent mural of the Giant Ice Age Bison at the Brazos Valley Museum of Natural History in Bryan. It is a great place to spend an afternoon learning about natural history and there are some caches nearby, too!
