Geocache Description:

Dunheved Cross is a scheduled ancient monument. It is one of over 350 wayside christian crosses erected in South West England during the medieval period (between the 9th and 15th centuries AD). Wayside crosses often fulfilled a role of waymarking a route in difficult or unmarked terrain. They may have served a religious function for access to regious sites for parishioners or pilgrims travelling long distances.

The cross was erected in its current location after construction of the current A30 Launceston by-pass in 1981. Prior to this it was sited further South roughly on the line of the existing Eastbound carriageway. It was erected there in 1902 to mark the coronation of Edward VII after parts of the cross were found in nearby fields. The first location of the cross is unknown but it probably served a function of directing travellers to Launceston, a major adminsrative centre and market town in medieval times.
