Wende Road has long been lined with shops focusing on calligraphy and traditional paintings mostly harking back to Ming and Qing periods. The nearby alleyways tend to be related to these functions, as do many of the small streets feeding into Wenming Lu. In 2019 many of the alleyways in this area were upgraded with new landscaping elements and paving, but mostly the activities remain the same, with cottage industries devoted to framing and printing the Wende Road and Wenming Road art shops. The alleyways around Wenming Road are usually busy with passers-by and activities related to the art, printing and picture framing businesses.
From this cache, walk about 30 meters north along Qingyunzhijie, after crossing Yudianhao, the alley is called "Wenmingmen". The name comes from the fact that there was a city gate near the southern city wall of the ancient inner city of Guangzhou (along the present Wenming Road), called "Wenming Men (Gate)". The wall and gate has long since ceased to exist without a trace, and only the name of this alley remains to recall history.
