Cangqian Zhijie provides one of many north-south connections to the river from the Beijing Road area. Since that pedestrianized connection to the river has never been made from Beijng Road, this alternative is a more attractive option. (In truth, the river has never been a particularly key destination since the roadways to the north and south serve primarily traffic functions.)
Cangqian Zhijie alleyway provides a good example of why seeking out an alternative alleyway is almost always, at least in the areas where this option is available, preferable to the main traffic-dominated roadways.
