In 1913 the Dominion Government of Canada created the park as a public demonstration arboretum and ornamental garden. Trees and shrubs from around the world were planted here to see which would thrive in the Saanich climate. Today the park is still owned by the federal government of Canada and is being maintained and restored by a non profit organization, Friends of Dominion Brook Park ("DBP") and the municipality of North Saanich. As part of the restoration, a beautiful dry stone bridge was constructed in 2018 in the ravine below this cache, the first built in Canada west of Ontario. In 2019, the local company Rocks and Stones, the Board of Directors of DBP and a few friends built a dry stone wall at the south approach to the bridge. Volunteers and donations are relied on for future dry stone constructions and Wednesday morning (Apr - Oct) gardening to continue the restoration.
