Recently, a geocacher seeking help on Schadenfreude sent me a note stating, “just because aliasmom can solve (a puzzle) blindfolded in the dark with her hands tied behind her back, doesn’t mean that the rest of us don’t need a little help.” This made me laugh, but it also gave me an idea for a puzzle that you can't do blindfolded and in the dark.

There are natural optical illusions, such as Fata Morgana mirages, and there are man-made illusions, such as Magic Eye stereograms. Our brains simultaneously and constantly process an incredible number of stimuli and bits of information and piece it all together in near real time to recreate our own unique realities. However, what we consider our “reality” is actually our brains making their best guesstimates.

Many puzzle images present more than meets the eye. What seems like a simple task may be difficult to focus on. You have to keep your eyes peeled for something, anything, or else the puzzle maker may successfully pull the wool over your eyes. Sometimes the solution is right before your eyes, but other times, you can hardly believe your own eyes. There is one thing for certain: when you remain focused and figure out the solution, it is a sight for sore eyes! Below is a Magic Eye stereogram, which will lead you to a puzzle solution. Don’t blink!


If Magic Eye stereograms are too difficult on your eyes and you rather solve the puzzle another way, here is another option. (I actually know several geocachers who cannot see the hidden messages in stereograms, so I am giving them this option.) This puzzle is the fifth in a series of puzzle hides that I have placed on Mount Tamalpais. The puzzles will range in difficulty but maintain higher terrain ratings. All of the hides are ammo cans. If you like puzzles, ammo cans, and adventurous hiking, this series should be right up your alley! All caches are hidden off the beaten path, and I would suggest taking a friend along.
