This is the first cache in series along and around the Trent and Mersey Canal
The Trent and Mersey Canal is a 93 1⁄2-mile (150 km) canal running from the River Trent, through Derbyshire, Staffordshire and Cheshire (and via the Bridgewater canal) to the River Mersey. It was built to link the two Rivers, providing an inland route between the major ports of Hull and Liverpool. Mileposts along the Canal show distances to each end. Preston Brook to the North and Shardlow to the South.
It was planned by engineer James Brindley and took from 1766 to 1777 to be constructed, including 70 locks and 5 tunnels.
There are several notable features along the canal including the Anderton boat lift, which at the time of its refurbishment in 2002 was the only boat lift in the UK, and the flyover junction at Harecastle which sees the canal branch off and then turn back over itself.
