This cache will let you explore an abandoned paper mill in La Borra, near Pontedera.
Percorrendo la FI-PI-LI, nel tratto tra Pontedera e Ponsacco, un po' tutti avranno notato una ciminiera in mattoni con la punta un po' in bilico a poca distanza. La ciminiera è l'elemento più distaccato di un interessante esempio di archeologia industriale citato sin dal 1868. Nel 1877 venne costruito in questo terreno, a poca distanza dall'ansa del fiume Era, un mulino ad acqua, e pochi anni dopo un fabbricato che dal 1901 fu usato per ricavare l'olio di sansa. Nel 1924 il mulino divenne una cartiera che usava la paglia come materia prima per la realizzazione della carta. Nel 1950 fu costruita la ciminiera, e nel 1957 la fabbrica venne definitivamente chiusa in seguito al fallimento. Lungo il fiume si ossservano ancora alcuni resti della presa d'acqua che serviva ad alimentare la fabbrica.

La fabbrica oggi è in stato di abbandono, con strutture fatiscenti e a rischio di crollo. Sul terreno possono esserci ostacoli e buche con pericolo di caduta. Fate attenzione a dove mettete i piedi e tenete sempre d'occhio cosa c'è sopra di voi.

Driving along the FI-PI-LI road, in the stretch between Pontedera and Ponsacco, everyone will have noticed a brick chimney with the tip slightly hovering a short distance away. The chimney is the most detached element of an interesting example of industrial archeology mentioned since 1868. In 1877 a water mill was built on this land, not far from the bend of the Era river, and a few years later another building was added; since 1901 it has been used to extract pomace oil. In 1924 the mill became a paper mill that used straw as a raw material to make paper. In 1950 the chimney was built, and in 1957 the factory was definitively closed following the bankruptcy. Along the river there are still some remains of the water intake that served to feed the factory.
ATTENTION DANGER
The factory today is in a state of neglect, with dilapidated structures and at risk of collapse. On the ground there can be obstacles and holes with danger of falling. Pay attention to where you put your feet and always keep an eye on what's above you.
