Geocache Description:

Chewy was my grandparents dogs years ago. I don't remember a lot about him, but I remember that he was very smart, and had golden hair. For some reason, this copper spring has always reminded me of him. You are looking for a small green pill bottle, but you can't see it until you remove the rocks covering it. You may open the small white gate, and walk down to the spring. Please don't go farther into the property. NO HUNTING!

Here is the history of Copper Springs: The Spring got it's name from the copper color of the water, but actually it's the iron in the water that gives it the orange-like color. My Grandparents told me that the Spring had never run dry and was even used by early settlers and people traveling through. They apparently even camped there and some stories were that there might even be buried "treasure" nearby because Jessie James may have stopped by on his way to Missouri. I'm not sure who carved out a 8-10 inch deep pocket into the shale so that milk and other things could be kept there so they would be cooled by the spring water. My Dad told me he would walk down to the Spring to get the cold milk and other items like butter, etc. They had to work to keep the Spring cleaned out and the better the water flowed in and out down to the creek the better and clearer the water would be. Jimmy Russ and I cleaned out the Spring and I built a shed- like over it, back in about 2005-6. We also put concrete blocks down to form a bigger area just below but still "connected" to the upper carved out pocket. We were going to use it to keep minnows and other fish we caught on our fishing trips to the Lake and streams like the Cadron, Illinois, Buffalo, in the Spring. It didn't work very well because the oxygen content of the water was so low. We also ran a plastic pipe to the Spring to help carry away the extra water overflow down to the creek. The Spring Still Runs To This Day!
