Geocache Description:

Airdrie's grain elevators are sadly no more, but they existed right up until 2000, and were located just West of here, near where the retirement centre is now.

The first elevators were built during 1904-1905, and a few additional elevators were built in 1929 by the Alberta Wheat Pool. We remember them well, as they were easy to see from West Airdrie, back when there were very few, if any, housing developments in the area. There is a centennial plaque talking about the old elevators, close to the South entrance of Fletcher Park, right beside the walkway.

The grain elevators of Western Canada are sometimes lovingly referred to as "Prairie Sentinels" and we've always liked checking them out as we drive through Alberta. The old wooden ones are certainly quickly becoming extinct, so it's nice to pay homage to these old structures, which were so important to the livelihood of people "back in the day."
