Geocache Description:

Important: Read note below on winter access before travelling to search for the cache.

Site History

This cache sits on the site of Manitoba's first "demonstration farm", in the rural municipality of Killarney-Turtle Mountain.

The farm and its main building were established around 1915 by the Manitoba Minister of Agriculture, George Lawrence, who was a resident of Killarney. The purpose of the facility was to promote farming practices and to identify crop varieties suited to this region of the province. The heritage building itself is a two-storey, wood frame building known as a "four-square", a style common to the area.

The demonstration farm was closed in 1946, after which the building was at various times used as a Royal Canadian Mounted Police barracks, a private school, and a museum. It was fully renovated by volunteers around 2016.

The building and grounds are now occupied by the Killarney Turtle Mountain Arts Council. It contains an art gallery on the lower floor, and art workshops upstairs. There are public restroom facilities inside and seating outside.

More information on the history of the facility can be found on the website of the Manitoba Historical Society.

Cache Details

The cache itself is a small to medium, black, plastic box, with a geocaching logo on the top. It is large enough to accommodate trackables.

Congratulations to KatieK7000 for being the First To Find.

Winter Access

In the summer months (May-September) the cache can be found at the posted coordinates.

In the winter months (October-April) the cache can be found inside the building. You can roam through the building to find it (there is no entrance fee), ask the employees, or view the cache hint. The building is open 12am-4pm, Tuesdays to Saturdays. It may also be open at other times, or for longer hours, for special occasions such as Canada Day.

There is a wheelchair ramp into the building, but use care when there is snow and ice on the ground.
