Virtain seurakunnan pitkäaikaisimpiin pappeihin kuului Karl Gustav Törnqvist. Hän saapui Virroille vappuna 1863 kappalaiseksi ja asettui asumaan Marttisen pappilaan. Törnqvist toimi paitsi voimakkaana pappismiehenä myös talous- ja kunnallismiehenä. Törnqvistillä oli jatkuvasti töissä 3-4 renkiä ja saman verran piikoja. Törnqvist tunnettiin kovaluontoisena työnantajana joka valvoi saamisiaan tiukasti. Pappilan kunnosta ei pidetty kovin hyvää huolta, koska Törnqvistin toimi oli vain väliaikainen ja koko ajan odotettiin seurakunnan itsenäistymistä (siihen saakka Virrat oli osa Ruoveden seurakuntaa). 1889 valittiin erityinen komitea tekemään suunnitelmaa uuden Pappilan rakentamisesta. Tämä Pappila toimisi tulevan kirkkoherran asuntona ja edustaisi uuden itsenäisen seurakunnan arvoa. Uuden pappilan suunnitteli Onni Törnqvist (myöhemmin Tarjanne), Karlin poika. 1892 kokonaan uudelleen rakennettuna Pappila odotti uutta isäntäänsä, Virtain ensimmäistä kirkkoherraa. Törnqvistin valintaa kirkkoherraksi pidettiin varmana. Kuntalaiset eivät kuitenkaan valinneetkaan kovaluontoisena ja ankarana miehenä tunnettua Törnqvist kirkkoherraksi. Törnqvist ei siis ehtinyt asua päivääkään uudistetussa Pappilassa. Törnqvist joutui lähtemään Marttisen Pappilasta. Kerrotaan, että Törnqvistin kuoltua Marttisen Pappilassa alkoi kummittelemaan.

The ghost of a vicarage
One of the most long-term priests in the congregation of Virrat was Karl Gustav Törnqvist. He
arrived to Virrat on 1st of May 1863 as a chaplain and lived in the vicarage of Marttinen. Törnqvist
was not only known for his powerful role as a priest but also played a role in economical and
municipal issues in Virrat. Constantly he employed 3-4 hired men and the same amount of servant
girls. He was known a hard-natured employer who controlled his receivables strictly. Törnqvist was only hired temporarily so the condition and reparations of the vicarage was not a priority. Independency of the congregation was highly anticipated since until then the congregation
was part of the congregation of Ruovesi. In 1889 a special committee was chosen to make a plan to build a new vicarage. This new vicarage
would serve as a home for the new vicar and would represent the value of a new independent congregation. New vicarage was designed by Onni Törnqvist (later Onni Tarjanne), the son of Karl Törnqvist. In 1892 the new vicarage was ready for its new master, the very first vicar of congregation of Virrat. Karl Törnqvist’s election as a vicar was considered secure. But the residents of Virrat did not choose Törnqvist, known as hard-natured and harsh, to be their vicar. Therefore he didn’t live even a day in the new vicarage. He had to leave from the vicarage of Marttinen. It is being told that after the death of Karl Törnqvist, the haunting started in the vicarage of Marttinen.
