The Allegheny River was selected as the 2017 PA River of the Year after receiving 45% 0f the 16,700 votes cast by the public in an online voting contest that ran from November 10th to December 19th, 2016. This cache is placed to bring you to a very scenic area with a great view of the Allegheny River or the Allegheny Reservoir that is frequently visited by our national symbol, the Bald Eagle.
Home to an increasing bald eagle population, the Allegheny River flows more than 315 miles from its source in Potter County through the state, including a portion of the PA Wilds, and ends when it joins the Monongahela River at Pittsburgh to form the Ohio River. With a watershed area of 11,580 square miles, it contributes 60 percent of the Ohio River flow at Pittsburgh. Eighty-six miles of the Allegheny River — from Kinzua Dam to Emlenton — are a federally designated National Wild and Scenic Recreation River, containing seven islands that are protected under America’s National Wilderness Preservation System.
