St George and St Mary is the historic Parish Church of Church Gresley. Its history can be traced back nearly 1000 years. In 1135AD St George's Priory was founded in Church Gresley and the remains of the nave of the priory are incorporated into the church. The Grade II* listed building dates back to the 14th Century; the tower is from the 15th Century and other parts from the 18th and 19th Centuries with restorations in 1786 and 1932-1934 and a new chancel added in 1872.
In December 2017 the church was forced to close St George’s and St Mary’s building due to falling masonry and now meets in a local school; plans are being made to restore the building.
