The Decorah Eagles raise their young in a nest near here. Information about the eagles can be found on the website raptorresource.org: https://www.raptorresource.org/birdcams/decorah-eagles/ Thanks to them for providing many of the facts below.

There have been several nests in the Siewers Springs area over the years. Millions of people have witnessed and marveled at life in the nest as a result of the Decorah Eagles webcam launched by Bob Anderson. Because of his vision, we have been able to observe the eagles as they add to the nest every year, copulate, and lay the eggs. We’ve anticipated and watched the hatching of the eggs and became infatuated with the eagles as they grew.  We saw them fledge the nest in hopes that they would survive on their own.

A. According to the Raptor Resource webpage, as of 2020, there have been __ Eagle nests in the Siewers Springs area or territory. In 2021, the eagles built a new nest on private property. Add the number of nests up to 2021 plus the new nest to get A.

B. The first nest, N0, was built in the hills to the east of the hatchery. It was destroyed in a storm in the year 200B. That same year the eagles built N1 in the yard of a home just north of the hatchery to replace N0.

C. The eagles can be seen carrying fish, squirrels, rabbits, birds and other small animals to the nest using their sharp talons. An eagle has C talons on each foot.

D. Nest N2B was built by Neil Rettig and Kike Arnal to replace Nest N2 that was destroyed during a storm. The ‘B’ is in honor of Bob, who passed away earlier that year. The eagles adopted the nest and raised their first eaglets in N2B in the year 201D.

E. While in the area, you will probably see the eagles soaring above, perched in a tree, or fishing at Trout Run stream or the nearby Trout Hatchery. Bald Eagles have a wingspan of 5.9 - E.5 feet.

F. The eaglets are not given traditional names, rather letters and numbers, so that people do not look at them as pets. The first named eaglets, E1, E2, and E3, were born in the year 201F.
