Geocache Description:

STAY ON PUBLIC PROPERTY! DO NOT VENTURE INTO THE YARD

I am a zoologist by training and thought it would be fun to do a virtual zoo. Ah, but where to start?  I decided to start alphabetically with the letter "A", which brings us to the cache name... Dasypus novemcinctus. This is the scientific name for an armadillo, the nine-banded armadillo, to be exact.

The name armadillo comes from Spanish and means "little armored one", which is quite fitting wouldn't you say? There are several species of armadillos. If you are from Texas or Oklahoma, you may be familiar with this species. They protect themselves by jumping (this doesn't bode well if they are trying to protect themselves from a passing car). Media has introduced us to the South American three-banded armadillo which roll into a very tight ball to protect their underbelly. But my favorite is probably the six-banded armadillo, also from South America. I worked with a couple of these guys, Dozer and Daisy. To protect themselves, six banded armadillos burrow under ground.

This cache is, of course, NOT under ground, but there are some hints in this description to help you find the cache. Also, DO NOT go into the yard. You can stay on the sidewalk/public property.

More zoology caches to come in the future. Here is a link to the other caches in the Zoology series.
