Middlemarch written by ‘George Elliot’

The author was not a man. It was written by a woman! Mary Ann Evans used the pen name George Eliot to write her novels in a time when female novelists were seen as only romantic authors. Mary Ann wanted to be taken seriously as a writer, so a man's name got her the credit. She lived her life her own way and not like a typical Victorian woman.

She began writing the two pieces that would form the novel in 1869–1870 and completed it in 1871. Initial reviews were mixed, but it is now seen widely as her best work and one of the great novels in English.

Set in a fictitious Midlands town from 1829 to 1832, it follows distinct, intersecting stories with many characters. Issues include the status of women, the nature of marriage, idealism, self-interest, religion, hypocrisy, political reform, and education. The main character is Dorothea Brooke – An intelligent, wealthy woman with great aspirations which were sadly too futuristic for the time she lived in.
