Geocache Description:

Over the last thirty plus years I have watched this park grow into a great recreational place to spend time with friends and family.  Much of what the park has become is thanks to the GFWC Suburbin Women's Club. I tried to find some history on this particular park on the web but could not.  Instead I will tell you about the Girls Scout troop I had and what we did for the park.

We moved to Lenoir City in the spring of 1987.   There was a street festival going on at the time and I saw a Girl Scout leader with a few girls selling Girl Scout cookies.  Aha! I thought to myself.  At least I will know where to sign up my daughter for scouts.  I went over and introduced myself and several minutes later walked away wondering how I managed to yet once again let myself get wrangled into being a Girl Scout Leader.

Fast forward 7 months to November 1987.  In full swing of a new scouting year we were in search of a service project.  Having been over to the Lenoir City Park a few times that summer I made mention that there were no trash cans but lots of trash.  We decided to see what we could do for trashcans in the park.  I won't bore you with the assorted details but many phone calls later to various city officials, 20 fifty gallon drums and 5 gallons of the worst green paint you can imagine, all supplied by the city, our Girl Scout troop of ten girls, all under the age of 10 years old, and two leaders (whose age I won't mention) set out on a cold blustery Saturday morning painting those drums to turn them into trash cans.

Despite the cold, the girls had fun painting the drums and each other. Unfortunately I did not escape turning green when I sat down onto a pie tin full of paint. We completed a service project and the park had trash cans for a few years until they got nicer ones.

While visiting the park please spend time and hunt the many other caches including an earthcache. The attributes listed on this cache pertain for inside the park. Enjoy your visit.
