Geocache Description:

The coordinates of this container's location may be determined by collecting information from the The Cost of Freedom adventure lab, here in Albany. To log this cache, one must first complete that adventure lab. The container's location can be found at N42 3A.BCD W73 4E.FGH. There are 3 lines inscribed on the back of this WW1 monument. The last word of the second line tells of a length of time the memory should remain fresh in our hearts. The number of letters in this word is C of the final coordinates.

The container is not at this location. The container is nearby. These coordinates take you to a monument related to The Great War.

Approximately 75 men from the city of Albany died overseas in World War 1, they were typically buried overseas. Albany decided to create this memorial in memory of those casualties, and their mothers. This area was named Memorial Grove.

At the time, this was a more quiet area of the city. One oak was planted here for each of those who died and the grove was planted with azaleas, rhododendrons and poppies. Many of those oaks can be seen here today. There was be a “Mound” to represent the graves of those killed in the War. The Grove is be a memorial to “serve both the living and the dead”.

One name for the monument on this site is "The Mother's Monument", as it represents a gold star mother. The sculptor, Attilio Picarrelli, did many other notable works and the model, Audrey Munson, was called “The American Venus”. She posed for many famous images including some US coins. In 1933 the City sponsored a competition for an additional memorial. A design for a large flagpole, inscribed with the names of the men from Albany who died in the Great War and embellished with symbolic Albany beavers was selected
