Since starting Geocaching back in 2008, I've enjoyed many a long day caching in the company of fellow Geocaching chums and invariably we have enjoyed a pint and a fine curry along the way. In fact, it's safe to say that one chum in particular always seems to be more preoccupied with where and when we are going to stop for a pint and curry than what caches are on the day's itinerary . With Geocaching being so closely tied to this custom, I decided to host a slightly less formal get together to celebrate Geocaching's 20th year and all the fabulous people, places, caches, beers and curries I have enjoyed during that time.
I then thought, wouldn't it be wonderful to publish this event as part of one of the many Geocaching national series I have enjoyed, but attempting to host a meet in a church or a phone box seemed somewhat limiting, as was the choice of beverages generally available in a village hall . I, therefore, settled on making this Community Celebration an addition to the Curry Micro cache series. This also had the additional provision for allowing attendees to claim a profile badge reward (Click here for details ) for attending a curry related meeting, as well as qualifying as a find in the Curry Micro statistics.
The Sir John Baker, North End, Portsmouth, PO2 0LN.
The venue has been selected as it offers a special Curry day (curry menu) offering a number of different curries on a Thursday from midday. Although please don't be put off by this if you don't fancy a curry, as they cater for just about everyone's taste, from excellent refillable coffee, hand made pizza, jacket potatoes to fish and chips and of course a huge variety of reasonably priced ales.
There is a pay and display car park (N 50° 49.004' W 1° 4.699') close-by and a bus stop 600 feet away. If you plan to travel by train, I would suggest catching a train to Cosham station and then catching the 23 bus (timetable) from the Health Centre bus stop 'E' (N 50° 50.675' W 1° 4.144') to North End Junction Stop G. Note: To catch the 23 to return to Cosham, you will need to catch it from North End Junction Stop C (N 50° 49.077 W 1° 4.746').
As the venue is always incredibly busy of an evening, I've decided after speaking to a couple of fellow cachers who can make the event to go for a lunchtime start. Hopefully allowing those cachers who are working on this day to 'pop by', as well as catering for the increasing number of cachers who rely on public transport to also attend a Community Celebration event during the week as not everyone is able to cache at the weekend due to other commitments. The venue offers free Wi-Fi.
Midday to 2 PM *.
Shortly before the start time, I shall publish by way of an 'Announcement' on this cache page our table number (Quote the table No. to the bar staff if you have a problem locating the table) so you can pop by and sign the Poppadom log and optionally take part in an 'X' marks the spot free to enter treasure hunt to win a 'The Best Finds Are Other Geocachers' unactivated Trackable, which was given to me by a Geocaching HQ Lackey that I had the pleasure of meeting at an event last year. The winner of the treasure hunt will be announced at 2 PM.
I always enjoy a chat about all things Geocaching, including giving some hints to the puzzle caches I own and answer any questions you may have regarding the playing or creation of Lab Caches and Wherigo adventures. So, if you are thinking of taking the plunge and attending your first Geocaching meeting, please do so and I'll introduce you to a few caching names you may well have seen in a Geocache log.
So, why not invite a few Geocaching chums of your own, grab a free table and join us!
* Although 2 PM has been specified as the earliest finish time, this is open to being extended depending on how well the event is going and I will post a second 'Announcement' giving one hours notice that the event will be finishing on this cache page to potentially alert other cachers on route or those who hoped to attend later in the day. Therefore it is advised to place a 'Watch' on this meet if you are interested in attending later than 2 PM. Note: the earliest that the event will be finishing announcement will be made is 1 PM, announcing the meet will finish at 2 PM.
If you have any questions, drop me a message.
