Red Dwarf is a British sci-fi comedy show about the last human being Dave Lister who is stuck on a 5 mile long Jupiter Mining Corporation spaceship named the Red Dwarf as he tries to find his way back to Earth. Lister was locked into stasis because he tried to smuggle his pet cat on the ship. While he was locked in stasis, a radiation leak killed the entire crew and the Red Dwarf headed to the far reaches of space to keep the radiation contamination from spreading. Three million years later, Lister was released from stasis. With Lister on this mining spaceship is a being named Cat that evolved from his cat, a Series 4000 mechanoid named Kryten, a hologram of his bunkmate named Arnold Rimmer and the sentient, "tenth-generation" artificial intelligence computer named Holly.
Holly is the artificial intelligence of the Red Dwarf mining ship. Boasting an IQ of over 6,000, Holly could control all the functions of the mining ship and guide it through deep space with no issues…. Until Arnold Rimmer smegged up and improperly replaced a drive plate causing a massive radiation leak killing everyone onboard; except for David Lister, who was protected while in stasis and David’s cat Frankenstein that was safely hiding in a lower deck. Holly guided the contaminated mining ship out of the solar system to keep it from contaminating anyone that would come across it. For three million years, Holly guided the Red Dwarf through the universe until the radiation contamination fell to a level that Lister could survive in after being released from stasis. Also during that three million years on his own, Holly, due to boredom, broke down with a case of computer senility, lost his intelligence and became, in his own words, “a bit peculiar”. But don’t panic… it’s all for good comedy!
