La Axarquía cuenta con el axarco, desde 1988, fecha en la que Antonio Gámez Burgos, natural de Vélez-Málaga, en su afán de construir una comarca unificada, decidió crear la moneda del axarco, un nexo de unión entre todos los habitantes de la comarca. La iniciativa de Gámez está inspirada en la época árabe de Andalucía, cuando desde 1480 hasta 1490 el sultán Abū ‘Abd Allāh Muḥammad az-Zaġall, llamado por los castellanos El Zagal (valiente), el penúltimo rey nazarí de Granada, concedió a la Comarca la existencia de una moneda.
Tanto las monedas como los billetes de axarcos y axarquillos muestran la imagen del botánico y médico malagueño Abén el Beithar, quien introdujo el cultivo de los cítricos en la comarca de La Axarquía. Mientras, en el reverso aparece la imagen de Felipe II, en cuyo reinado se produjo la rebelión de los moriscos de la comarca de la Axarquía y el Peñón de Frigiliana, municipio próximo a Vélez-Málaga y Nerja, símbolo de estos acontecimientos.
He puesto este caché para que conozcáis esta moneda y en este sitio para que veáis parte de la muralla que protegía a la antigua ciudad musulmana (La Medina). Cerca se encuentra la Puerta Real de la Villa que daba acceso a La Medina.
En el contenedor he colocado, además del libro de registro, una reproducción de un billete (un axarquillo) para que os lo llevéis de recuerdo: coge uno y deja los demás para los siguientes geocachers. Se requiere discreción, ya que es una zona plagada de muggles.

The region "Axarquía" counts since 1988 on the "axarco", date in which Antonio Gámez Burgos, native of Vélez-Málaga, decided to create a common currency called "axarco", to unify the region and as a connection between the population. This initiative was inspired by the arabic period of Andalusia from 1480 till 1490, when the Sultan Abū ‘Abd Allāh Muḥammad az-Zaġall, called by the spanish as "El Zagal" (brave), the penultimate Nasrid King of Granada, conceded to the region the possibility of an own currency.
Both coins and notes of axarcos and axarquillos show the image of the botanist and doctor from Málaga Abén el Beithar, who introduced the citrus farming in the region of La Axarquía. Meanwhile on the reversed, it appears the image of Felipe II, in whose reign took place the uprising of moriscos from Axarquía and Peñón de Frigiliana, village next to Vélez-Málaga and Nerja, symbol of these events.
I have placed this cache so that you get to know this currency and in this place in order to be able to see the part of the wall which protected the ancient Muslim city (the "Medina"). Next to it you can find the "Puerta Real de la Villa", which allows to enter in the "Medina".
In the container, which includes a logbook, I also put a copy of the note (axarquillo) as a souvenir: you should take one and let the others for the next geocachers. Stealth is required because it's full of muggles.
