This cache is part of a series of 17 caches that we have placed on the Heartland Trail between the cities of Orrville and Marshallville. This portion of the trail, that passes through the bucolic countryside, is nearly three miles long with a completely paved surface and plenty of benches. This trail is definitely a bicyclist’s paradise. While the trail is called the Heartland Trail, it was once the Cleveland, Akron, and Columbus Railway (CA&C) that serviced those three cities and almost every small town in between. The line remained active until the 1980’s when a series of mergers and weather-related incidents took a toll on the line south of Orrville. In 1986, the portion of track between Orrville and Clinton was abandoned, except for a small spur serving industries north of Orrville. The trail still offers some historical structures that were constructed by the railroad. Access to the trail can be found at the parking lots near Orrville and Marshallville (see parking coordinates).
