LETTERBOXING: Letterboxing is an intriguing pastime, combining artistic ability with delightful "treasure-hunts" in beautiful, scenic places that the whole family can enjoy. Participants seek out hidden letterboxes by following clues, and then record their discovery in their personal journal with the help of a rubber stamp that's part of the letterbox. In addition, letterboxers have their own personal stamps which they use to stamp into the letterboxes logbook. The origin of letterboxing can be traced to Dartmoor, Devon, England in 1854. William Crossing in his Guide to Dartmoor states that a well known Dartmoor guide James Perrott placed a bottle for visiting cards at Cranmere Pool on the northern moor in 1854. From this hikers on the moors began to leave a letter or postcard inside a box along the trail (sometimes addressed to themselves, sometimes a friend or relative) hence the name "letterboxing."The next person to discover the site would collect the postcards and post them. In 1938 a plaque and letterbox in Crossing's memory were placed at Duck's Pool on southern Dartmoor. Geocaching has hybrid caches called letterboxes. This is one such cache.
THE LETTERBOX: Letterboxing has evolved a little whilst being apart of Geocaching, GPS navigation has to be given as an option to find the cache. Rather than using your phone or GPS you can try to find the hide in the original letterboxing way.
To do this Start at ’Nyora’ (published coordinates) proceed South, make sure you ‘Drive carefully’ and say G’day to ‘ Hogan' as you go by, continue on, passing where the Ponies play, make sure you do ’ 60' and take the Left sweeper. By now you might be saying ‘Watt’ but worry not as you will be close to Number ’10', and you will see some tricky creations. If driving find a park (driveway is fine to use). The letterbox isn’t far. Bound by a chain to the east.
As this is a letterbox hybrid, you can find it in the traditional geocaching way using a GPS. The coordinates are listed as the Final location on this cache page.
**PLEASE NOTE:THIS CACHE IS HIDDEN ON THE BOUNDARY OF PRIVATE PROPERTY SO PLEASE BE RESPECTFUL AND SENSIBLE WHEN IT COMES TO THE TIMES YOU VISIT AND THE WAY YOU CONDUCT YOURSELF WHILE AT THE LETTERBOX. IT IS NOT NECESSARY TO ENTER PRIVATE PROPERTY TO ACCESS THE CACHE BUT IF YOU LIKE YOU MAY ENTER AND PARK ON PRIVATE PROPERTY YOU MAY ALSO 'LOOK AROUND'. Enjoy & Welcome to the Trickey family's amazing 'Tricky' collection of metal art. We hope you enjoy!
