During the 20's electricity in Britain was generated by councils or private companies... this often resulted in many different systems being used and with different standards... this made electricity expensive.
In 1926 a bill was passed with the aim to connect the 122 most efficient power stations together thus making the national grid. By the end of WW2 2/3's of homes had electricity and now there are over 4000 miles of overhead cables providing electricity to everyone.
