Geocache Description:

The city of Callaway was incorporated in 1907 after being built as a small feeder station along the Soo Line running North from Detroit Lakes. The Congressional Clapp Act of 1906 had opened reservations around the area to settlement by white people and many immigrants had moved to the area. A large majority of immigrants were Catholic hailing from Ireland, Germany and Bohemia. Finding a thriving native, Catholic population that dated back before 1869 plans were put in place to build a house of worship as the people were then served only infrequently by a traveling priest. E.G. Holmes and Jake Rahm donated 6 lots in Callaway and construction commenced. The entire cost, including the stained glass windows was less than $5,000. This original church still stands today although a front entry way and and a community room have since been added.
