The Wilder Ranch backcountry is one of my favorite places to hike in the bay area. Wilder Ranch has everything -- panoramic ocean views, big sky, meadows, wildflowers, creeks, and redwoods. It's a state park, but there are plenty of other legal and free entrances along Highway 1 and Empire Grade. The ocean breeze makes this a great destination even on a hot summer day.
This cache is placed at the junction of the Old Cabin and Wild Boar Trails and Engelsmans Loop. The quickest route is the Englesmans Loop trail, which is a roughly 4.5-mile loop starting at Highway 1, but there are many other routes to get here depending on how long you want to hike. You're looking for a small plastic jar within sight of the bench. There's an odd site nearby that I've never been able to identify. It looks like an unfinished bocce ball court to me. What do you think it is?
Wilder Ranch hours are sunrise to sunset. Enjoy the spectacular view and happy hunting!
