The Cherokee tribe refers to the Trail of Tears as 'Nunna daul Isunyi' which means “The Trail Where They Cried”
The Trail of Tears refers to the forcible removal of the Choctaw, Creek, Chickasaw, Cherokee, and Seminole nations from their traditional homelands in the East to Indian Territory, carried out by the US government mostly between 1831 and 1839. The term originated during the initial removal of the Choctaws in 1831 and is often applied in particular to the removal of the Cherokees in 1838-1839. It was a six-month journey undertaken by 14,000 Cherokee Indians who were being forcibly relocated. 4000 died on the journey.
